League Match Six – Tergemo vs Moorehouse (home)

Result: 3-1 Win

Scorers: Hassan (2) Osborne

Team: T.Clarke, E.Appiah, O.Oladapo, E.Saricicek, N.Connor, D.Eden, Ben, D.Walker, A.Dolan(c), S.Hassan, D.Osborne

Two goals from Hassan fired Tergemo to a well deserved victory after a superb performance.  Despite a horrendous injury list, with Dolan having only a thread bear squad to pick from, and playing nearly half a game with ten men, this was a great win for the Lions.

Tergemo nearly had a goal in the first minute, D.Eden being played in down the right flank, but the keeper saved well at his near post as he narrowed the angle for Eden.  But Tergemo didn’t wait long for the lead!  In fierce wind, Osborne grabbed a timely first of the season in the second minute, his vicious inswinging corner was too good for the keeper, who could only palm the ball into the net.  1-0.   Moorehouse seemed the team with a man short, as Tergemo ran the midfield.  After twenty minutes the lead was doubled in spectacular fashion!  Hassan spotted the keeper slightly off his line, and thumped in a 25 yard volley into the roof of the net!!  2-0.  Tergemo continued to be the better side, forcing saves from the keeper, and then late on Osborne hit the bar with a brilliant curling effort.  But just before half time, a fortunate ricochet went Moorehouse’s way, and the attacker was able to slot home from close range.  1-2.

A tighter second half in the first twenty minutes was then wrestled back under Tergemo’s control.  Chances came and went to finish the game off, but with ten minutes to go Hassan grabbed his second with a neat finish to grab the points.  3-1.  Hassan had a couple of great chances to complete his hat trick, including a one on one, but his double was enough for the Lions.

With a goal keeper, four full backs, a centre back and a central midfielder all out injured, plus a couple of other players MIA, this victory showed the spirit in the Tergemo squad to roll their sleeves up and still produce the quality for the win!

League Match 4 – Archway Allstars vs Tergemo (away)

Result: 2-5 Win

Scorers: Compton (2), Conner (2), Walker

Team: T.Clarke, R.Gouge, L.Charlton (R.Oladapo), E.Appiah, E.Bernal, A.Dolan(c), A.Compton, M.Clarke, D.Walker, N.Connor, D.Osborne.

Tergemo proved themselves quick learners as they improved on the performance from the previous week to win 5-2 against Archway. The Lions adopted a different approach to this game with a 4-5-1 formation, identifying central midfield as a key area from which they could change the fortunes between these two teams.

Andrew Compton put himself forward as being the breakaway man from midfield to support lone striker Osborne and boy did he do this to good effect. Five minutes in, a ball in from the right caused confusion within the Archway area allowing Osborne and Dolan to link up with a one-two that was deflecting by an Archway defender only for the ball to break to Compton who controlled with his right and smashed with his left into the roof of the net to make it 1-0.

The goal came against the run of play as Archway had made the early running, creating three decent chances which Clarke and the defence in front of him dealt with superbly.

With Tergemo a goal ahead, Compton pounced again, this time getting behind the Archway defence before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home from a tight angle 2-0. As Archway looked to get back into the game, Eugene Appiah deputising for the absent O.Oladapo at the back stepped to the forefront with precise tackling and a cool head to play the ball out in a way that helped to relieve pressure. The returning Bernal also gave stability to the defence with Charlton and Gouge providing great balance within the back line.

With a solid base behind them, the front six of Tergemo pushed forward again to devastating effect, this time through Nick Conner. The young wing-wizard received the ball from a throw on the left flank, turned to face his marker and then ran at him, beating two while cutting in and then curling a sweet shot around the rooted keeper into the bottom left-hand corner. Conner was playing with great confidence in this fixture throughout.

A superb piece of vision from Osborne which followed a crunching slide tackle to win the ball in the first place was latched onto by the impressive Conner who nonchalantly clipped the ball past the keeper with the outside of his right boot to make the score an emphatic 4-0 with just twenty five minutes gone.

A goalkeeping change from Archway saw them tighten up a bit but there was still time for one more and it came from the boot of Danny Walker. Clarke claimed the ball superbly and quickly distributed the ball to Dolan on the left wing. The central midfielder beat two men before passing the ball 40 yards into the path of Danny Walker who outpaced everyone on the pitch before lifting the ball over the stranded goalkeeper 5-0.

The second half came with Clarke putting in his usual level of commitment and ensuring that an Archway comeback was not on the cards. The midfield general was not about to let the team’s lead slip and looked his sharp self of last season. This was just about the only real positive from the second half as a penalty that was in fact not in the area was converted coolly by the Archway captain and then a decent hit from the home team’s number ten made the game 5-2. Unfortunately Clarke had to be substituted for reasons we had better not write down on our own website, Charlton picked up a nasty injury and an unlucky Archway man was dismissed late on but no more goals.

Having played Archway twice now, it is clear that they will always pose a threat to Tergemo but if the Lions can continue to play like they did in the first half then there is no reason why we should fear anyone. I would like to finish by saying that Archway are a decent outfit who play the game in a competitive way but also a fair way, we will have to be ready when we next face them!

Challenge Cup Round One – Archway Allstars vs Tergemo (away)

Result: 1-3 Loss

Scorers: Walker

Team: Hinds, L.Charlton, O.Oladapo, A.Dolan(c), D.Geelan(R.Gouge), A.Compton, D.Walker, N.Connor(E.Appiah), D.Osborne, S.Oladapo

Tergemo crashed out of the Challenge Cup against top flight opposition in a match that the Lions struggled to roar.

A Lucky double deflection broke kindly for the Archway centre forward who made the most of his fortune.  His half volley from 18 yards flew into the corner off the far right post.  0-1.  Archway pushed on, and a long ball down the middle caught Tergemo out from a break.  Charlton was unlucky on full stretch, as he couldn’t get enough purchase on the clearance, the ball was steered into the path of the grateful forward who converted the simple chance.  0-2.  Tergemo finally woke up to compete, with Dolan performing a brilliant last ditch block on a certain goal.  Tergemo went into the break with a bang, clawing a goal back on the stroke of half time.  Osborne’s corner was flicked on at the near post, and Walker rose highest at the far post to head home.  1-2.

Tergemo pushed in the second half, but the killer third blow was struck just beyond the hour mark.  A perfect ball from the left wing was just beyond Dolan, and just in front of Hinds, meaning the forward could nip in and slot home.  1-3.  Tergemo had a fair few chances, with Dolan firing over and Walker firing wide the most notable, and it was Tergemo who looked the most likely to score, but Archway held on to go through.

Tergemo face Archway again next week in the league.  A bit of bad luck, and a bit of sloppy play meant goals against here today, but there was plenty of evidence to suggest Tergemo can get goals.  So a more disciplined display next week and the Lions will be roaring again.

League Match Three – Phoenix vs Tergemo (away)

Result: 3-1 Win

Scorers: S.Oladapo (2) Walker

Team: Hinds, L.Charlton(R.Gouge), O.Oladapo, A.Dolan(c), D.Geelan, E.Appiah, A.Compton, D.Walker, N.Connor(E.Saricicek), D.Osborne, S.Oladapo

Tergemo recorded their first win in the top flight as they battled back from being a goal down to finish strongly in a hard fought match against Division One mainstays Phoenix.

A dreadful start from Tergemo seen Phoenix running the game for the opening 25 minutes, and it was all Tergemo could do to get a foothold in the game and keep the score at 0-1 once Phoenix had taken their early lead.  The Lions were undone by a ball down the middle, with the pacey no.10 racing onto it and coolly lobbing the advancing Hinds.  Tergemo could not put their foot on their ball, which meant the Phoenix attacks kept coming.  Hinds was at his brilliant best to tip a free kick around the post, and a couple of dangerous crosses peppered the box, but at the mid way point in the half Tergemo rolled their sleeves up and got back into the game.  The main reason for this was the combative duo in the middle, Appiah and Compton were rattling into the midfield men of Phoenix, and once this stranglehold was broken, Tergemo began to play their game as Osborne and S.Oladapo started to get more of the ball.  After a couple of shots from the edge of the box and a few half chances, Tergemo got the equaliser as Half Time approached.  Appiah was taken down after some trickery, and Dolan clipped the ball up to the penalty spot.  A.Compton did well to make a nuisance of himself, occupying both centre backs, and S.Oladapo was on hand to benefit, sweeping the ball low into the bottom corner, 1-1.

Most of the second half followed the pattern of the latter stages of the opening period, plenty of hustle and bustle and strong challenges.  Phoenix tried to use the flanks after being cut off in the middle, and Tergemo were trying to utilise pace up front by getting in behind the Phoenix back line, but chances were at a premium.  Hinds again denied Phoenix, a brilliant reaction save at his near post after a good low ball in from the left wing, and Geelan was on hand to hack clear the rebound.  And then with less than ten minutes to go, S.Oladapo grabbed the winner with his second of the game!!    The Gun rose tallest to head home from O.Oladapo’s long throw, a feature of Tergemo’s attacking arsenal.  2-1.  Phoenix pressed for an equaliser, but in the closing moments all they did was leave space for Tergemo to finish them off on the break.  Walker released S.Oladapo down the middle, but the cool finish was denied by the post!!  The ball hitting the inside of the post and falling nicely into the path of Walker, who had continued his run, to slot home the open goal.  3-1.

This was a big win for Tergemo.  Playing against seasoned top flight opponents, this was the first test of the season to pit wits against a division One regular side.  Tergemo know there will be no easy games, this game was won with hard work and a great commitment to the cause.  The football was not quite as free flowing as the Lions would have liked, but again this will probably be a feature of this division;  earning the right to play good football with hard work.  Next up Tergemo have two cup games in the next three, after a week off, so it was important to record the three points in this league game.

League Match Two – Moorehouse vs Tergemo (away)

Result: 1-1 draw

Scorers: O.G

Team: Hinds, L.Charlton, O.Oladapo, E.Saricicek, D.Geelan(R.Gouge), M.Clarke(E.Appiah), A.Compton, D.Walker(N.Connor), A.Dolan(c), D.Osborne, S.Oladapo

The honours were shared as both teams did each other a favour by putting through each others net!  In a game of two own goals, it was Tergemo who had more of the chances, but as it took a late equaliser, a draw was probably a fair result.

Moorehouse started lively, a more rounded outfit compared to the pre-season friendly last month.  And in the first twenty minutes the home side took the lead.  The ball was fired in low from the right, a dangerous ball across the six yard box.  With numerous players in the box, it was the unfortunate Saricicek who got the final touch to send the ball into the net.  0-1.   Tergemo went into half time wondering how they hadn’t equalised, with every throw-in and corner seemingly cleared off the line, or at least causing mayhem in the six yard box!

The chances kept coming in the second period, again the Moorehouse goalline being peppered, but no one could prod the ball over the line!  O.Oladapo just missed the far post with a drilled low cross-shot.  Connor had a header saved.  But with less than five minutes Tergemo got the goal they deserved.  Osborne fired the ball across the area from the right, and with Dolan in the middle causing a nuisance, the Moorehouse defender’s attempted clearance cannoned into the net via a deflection off is own man!  1-1.

Tergemo grabbed their first point in the top flight, but would have fancied all three before kick off.  The Lions haven’t quite hit roaring status yet, so the team know there is a lot more to come!!

League Match One – Tergemo vs Ford Stamping (home)

Result: 3-2 Win (AET)

Scorers: S.Oladapo (2) Walker

Team: Hinds, R.Gouge(N.Connor), O.Oladapo, E.Saricicek, D.Geelan, M.Clarke(S.Dada), A.Compton, D.Walker, A.Dolan(c), D.Osborne, S.Oladapo

Tergemo ended the London Cup hoodoo that has dogged them in the past two years to grab a last minute winner and progress to round two!  S.Oladapo was the man who fired home the winner with the last kick of the game in Extra time, after Walker had rescued the Lions with a late equaliser in normal time!

Most of the first half was an even affair, with chances for both sides, but Tergemo were the team who led at the interval.  Tergemo nearly took the lead with a speculative Dolan effort that cannoned off the cross bar!  The Ford goalkeeper failed to get distance on his clearance, and Dolan was quick to spot the opportunity, hitting the ball first time on the volley from 40 yards.  Ford also went close, a ball down the middle caught Tergemo napping, but Saricicek’s slide was enough to put off the forward, and the shot skimmed the top of the bar.  Hinds had to be sharp and alert, saving well on two occasions.  Geelan swung in a great cross, but A.Compton got too much on his diving header and sent the ball over.  A.Compton made a good return to the side, and started the move for the opening goal.  His surging run found Osborne, who played in S.Oladapo to fire home after robbing the centreback.  1-0.

Tergemo seemed to be cruising as the second half went past the hour mark, but then a dreadful decision levelled the game up.  Gouge was adjudged to have pushed the Ford attacker in the back, so the referee gave a penalty.  The penalty was dispatched, Hinds unlucky as it went under his body whilst diving to his right.  1-1.  Tergemo then shot themselves in the foot ten minutes later, a long hopeful ball forward caught out Hinds and Saricicek, and the forward nipped in to slot home during the indecision.  1-2.  S.Oladapo header over from a Geelan free kick as Tergemo applied pressure for a stirring finale.  And Walker was the man to provide it in the final 5 minutes!!  Osborne played him in on the right, and with a good touch to take the ball past his man, Walker drilled the ball into the far corner with the outside of his right boot!  2-2.

The first period of extra time passed without much incident, but Tergemo had the two best moments.  Connor linked up well on the left flank, and was unlucky to see his fierce shot saved at the near post.  The Osborne beat two players before firing in a bullet from 20 yards, but the keeper did well to push the ball wide at full stretch.

The second period had a lot of incident for a 15 minute spell!  A Ford free kick 25 yards out was always going to be dangerous, and the ball clipped the top of the bar on the way over!  Then from a throw in Geelan did well to get himself on the goal line once the first ball was flicked on, the big left back was in the right place at the right time to clear off the line.  Penalties seemed inevitable, but Tergemo had one last set piece before the spot kicks, and made the most of it!  Osborne fired across the box, Dada shot low at the far post, and S.Oladapo showed great predatory instincts, touch and composure by controlling the ball in front of the crouched keeper with his right foot before slotting home with his left foot!!  3-2.

Both teams created chances, and for the most part this was a balanced game.  Tergemo have had rotten luck in previous London Cup ties, so cashed in at the luck counter by grabbing two late goals to take the tie!  The spirit was good in the side, and also the fitness, 120 minutes in just game two of the season is a test, and yet it was the Tergemo team who had the legs at the end.  Clear cut opportunities were at a premium from the Tergemo backline, something that needed tightening up after last weeks loss, and chances were created throughout the game – another good sign.  The new signings have settled well, and as Tergemo look forward to a cup run early in the season, the season has now started for the Lions!!!

League Match One – Tergemo vs Cobden (home)

Result: 2-4 Loss

Scorers: Connor, S.Oladapo

Team: Hinds, L.Charlton, O.Oladapo, E.Saricicek, D.Geelan(R.Gouge), M.Clarke(E.Appiah), N.Connor(S.Dada), D.Walker, A.Dolan(c), D.Osborne, S.Oladapo

The new league campaign started off with a grudge match between the two teams who finished in the top two of Division Two last season.  Debate still rages on as to how Cobden were allowed to take the Division Two title without playing their final two league games, but unfortunately for Tergemo it was Cobden who struck the first blow of the new campaign.

On the whole the game was played in the right spirit once an early flare up was promptly dealt with by the referee, but on the football side of things the key today was that Tergemo couldn’t break into stride, whereas Cobden settled into their “Bolton-esque” style more quickly.

Cobden started strongly with a spate of corners and set pieces, but went one up with a speculative hit after twenty minutes.  The big centre forward controlled the ball on his chest before swivelling and catching the ball on the rise, sending it looping over Hinds from 25 yards.  But Tergemo hit back, debut man Nick Connor firing home a low drive from the edge of the box after coming onto the loose ball.  1-1.  Slack marking at a corner granted Cobden a free header to go back in front, but Tergemo went in at the break even after S.Oladapo headed home at the near post from his brothers long throw.  2-2.

In the second half Cobden took the lead for the third time when they broke down the left, the ball being slid across the 6 yard box for the big centre forward to tap home his second.  2-3.  Tergemo rallied, and should have had an equaliser.  Walker had a goal ruled out for a push at a corner, and then S.Oladapo was sent clear down the right channel.  His shot beat the keeper, but came back off the post.  As Tergemo continued to push Cobden wrapped up the points late on.  Another Sunday swinger, as the sub curled the ball into the top corner from 25 yards.

The spirit was good in the Tergemo camp despite a loss to their big rivals.  The Tergemo passing game never quite happened, and in the end the effectiveness of the Cobden long ball game paid off.  Tergemo struggled to set up a stall today, with Cobden dominant in the air, the back line and midfield never seemed to be in the right place.  When the back line was deep, the chasm between defence and midfield meant that the second ball was being gobbled up by Cobden.  Tergemo know Cobden better than any other side, so a bit more homework will be necessary before the return fixture.  But on another day The Lions would have grabbed a point here, so the team head to next weeks London Cup tie knowing there is more in the locker.
